The Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery “Tree Scholarship”
Sponsored by the Andrews Family
In 2023, Mr. Roy Andrews, a prominent local businessman with a passion for planting trees, approached the cemetery board with an idea. He noticed the cemetery had been losing a number of old growth trees blown down by summer hurricanes and strong winter storms. Mr. Andrews wanted to share the environmental importance of planting trees with the youth in the community while helping to plant new trees in the cemetery. The cemetery wanted to maintain its park-like setting. The seeds for the Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery Tree Scholarship program were planted.
Each year we will award two scholarships of up to $2,000.00 each to two students from Yarmouth County high schools, who are accepted for post-secondary education by a college or university.
Emphasis is given to students who show strong community involvement.
Each recipient will be notified of the award at his or her high school graduation ceremony. As part of their award, they will take part in a ceremonial tree planting in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery before they leave for college. A plaque will be placed by each tree noting the type of tree, the name of the scholarship recipient, year received, and the sponsor.
In the summer of 2024, we awarded the first two scholarships and the recipients and their families attended a ceremonial tree planting. Two Thujas, a type of evergreen, were planted and signs commemorating the event were unveiled.
Thanks to the generosity of the Andrews Family and Mr. Andrews’ unique idea, we will continue to provide scholarships to the youth of our community and plant new trees for many years to come. We look forward to the Scholarship recipients returning to see how their trees have grown.
